Rasende Wut

"Prisoners" by Yojimbo

When two little girls are kidnapped and the police seem unable to prove a case against their prime suspect, their fathers choose to take matters into their own hands. Prisoners is another abduction thriller in a similar vein to the likes of Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone and Gone Girl. Although a little generic in this respect, its major asset is another towering performance from Jake Gyllenhaal whose intense detective draws you into the case and Dennis Villeneuve's direction provides plenty of tension and atmosphere. The only real issue with Prisoners is the script which, although not bad by any means, is nowhere near as clever as it thinks it is; it's just a little too contrived, a little too predictable and the twists and turns will be a little too easy to spot by anyone familiar with th...

Best Paced Film Of 2013

Edge of your seat suspense thriller. There wasn't anything I didn't enjoy about this movie except for the fact that I was a little to tense and on edge to go to bed after finishing last night. The story of two little girls who disappear is a parents worst nightmare. But the edge of your seat suspense this movie keeps you in for 2 and a half hours goes beyond that initial horrible feeling. You might think that two and half hours is a little to long but it felt just right to me. It was just long enough to make you feel that dread and horror that all the characters in the movie are feeling. That feeling of never finding the girls or worse finding what you don't want to find. That is all thanks to the great direction and pace director Denis Villeneuve gives the movie. The other key part of th...

Prisoners review

Mr. Keller Dover's and Franklin Birch's daughters, Anna and Joy, becomes missing while Alex Jones is a prime suspect. Detective Loki heads the investigation. Everything from the acting, story, background music and camera direction were spotless. Only concern this reviewer had were the instances where "luck" played a huge part in keeping the plot moving, camera shots that prolonged the length, a concrete conclusion. lack of better continuation and a better development/history of the antagonists. Unpredictable but one has to be patient to see its results and the meticulous direction. Screenplay was filled with quotable lines such as: "Be ready...I'm proud of you son." "This ain't right." He's a good man." and "Pray for the best, prepare for the worse yeah?" The picture reminded me ...

Review: Prisoners

Mysteries nowadays rarely establish the perfect atmospheric uneasiness that Prisoners, an absorbing and thought-provoking motion picture, does. An arguable exception could be made for this year's Side Effects, which was good but not exactly as terrific as it could have been. From its outstanding cinematography to its exceptionally relentless yet grounded performances, Prisoners is an excellent film. Immediately engaging, tension-heavy, dark, disturbing, and oozing with intensity, the film breaks through the gates as one of the best to be released all year.

The film was directed by Denis Villeneueve, who had made the almost equally excellent film Incendies a few years back. He really knocks it out of the park with Prisoners. Here is a film that grabs you both viscerally and emotionally...

Glowing with misery.

Looking back on Denis Villeneuve's haunting, slowly building and conclusively masterful piece of work, I will admit I was somewhat unfair in my original review. I get nitpick-y.

So, I thought I should revisit what I liked and didn't like and how my opinions have changed about it.

One of the first things that hit me when I watched it again was just how subtle it was. Repeat viewings really helped me decipher the hidden meanings and extremely dark and vile undertones, but we knew that in the first place.
What I loved about it was its attention, not only to detail, but to the situation. We can feel something is wrong from the get-go, and are left with thought-provoking and devastating questions throughout: What would you do to see your child again? Would you abandon your principles an...

Engaging Adult Crime Story

'Prisoners' is a heavily dramatic crime film laden with a mysterious and harsh atmosphere. A closer sense of realism overshadows this film. It's dark, and slower paced, but never ceases in delivering edge-of-your-seat entertainment. This is due to the high level of involvement that I felt watching this case being solved and for the palpable emotional weight delivered by the characters. They are so well defined and tremendously acted. I'm mostly referring to Gyllenhaal and Jackman, because it's really their show. It is, at times, depressing and heartbreaking to see the turmoil the situation brings to both families of the little girls. That is what adds anticipation and urgency to resolving the crime at hand. It builds to some good twists and a finale that had me gripping my seat....

It has been a very long time since we have seen an excellent mysterythriller, that is not directed by Christopher Nolan.
This movie is dark. Like, very dark. Even the weather is. Ít all makes the mood fit to the topic. The cast is pushing the movie up and makes even more dark.
The movie just lives from Jackman an Gyllenhaal, they both give Oscar-worthy performances. They even make Terrence Howard "disapear". The rest of the cast is just perfect. Jackman ist sometimes a little bit exaggerated at some points. Paul Dano gives an usual splendid performances though we sometimes only see his eye.
Denis villeneuve makes a perfect debut as director of mystery and may acclaim some awards as well. His direction is made for crime and mystery. He might be the next great director...
